Sweeney wins Johnstone's ultimate finish award
His team might have been knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but that hasn’t stopped Grimsby Town star Peter Sweeney from winning an award for his memorable goal in the competition.
The Mariners’ midfielder has won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s Ultimate Finish honour for his wonder goal in the area quarter finals at Leeds United.
January 2010
In one of the old laws of football, Sweeney returned to a former club to score, in spectacular fashion through a 25 yard screamer off the underside of the bar.
Sweeney will now receive a commemorate award from Denise Southworth who was picked at random to win. She will receive an ipod nano and will present Peter with his award ahead of Town’s home game with Cheltenham Town on Saturday January 16.
After each round a video of the best goals are displayed on the Johnstones paint trophy website for fans to log on and vote for their favorite from all the goals shortlisted. Peter’s emphatic finish came out on top for this round, with 49 per cent of fans voting it as their ‘Ultimate Finish’.
It beat the strikes by Bury’s Mike Jones (18 per cent) and MK Dons’ Aaron Wilbraham (15 per cent) into second and third place respectively.
The goal was Peter’s second in the trophy, following a similarly sweet strike in the second round away at Hartlepool.
He said: “It was a memorable goal from my point of view, and I am delighted that so many fans have voted it to win.
“We are just gutted that we could not progress further in the competition and that the goal didn’t count for more.”
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick added: “Peter’s strike was one of the best of the season so far and was a worthy winner.
“Our Ultimate Finish awards have really captured the imagination. We are getting scores of votes after each round, and are delighted with the whole initiative.”
