Penalties, goals & shocks – The Johnstone's Paint Trophy is back!

Three debutants, five penalty shoot-out dramas and a glut of goals including a first round hat-trick, marked the return of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

02 September 2009

Over 41,000 fans flocked to the first round’s 16 games as the competition welcomed newcomers Burton Albion, Torquay United and Norwich City.

With 45 goals (one more than last season) and an extra penalty shoot-out, the cheering and drama is set to get pulses racing among football fans in Leagues 1 and 2.

Many eyes were on Carrow Road as Norwich City secured a first ever win in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with a narrow 1-0 success over Brentford.

The first round hat-trick came courtesy of Stockport County’s Carl Baker, as he celebrated the 4-1 win at Crewe Alexandra in style.

An average of nearly three goals per game almost guaranteed fans net-busting action, with the promise of more to come as the competition enters autumn.

The winners of 2008, Milton Keynes Dons, met League 2 high flyers Dagenham & Redbridge, but triumphed thanks to a double from Jermaine Easter in a 3-1 win.

Other highlights of round one included 2007 finalists Bristol Rovers falling at the first hurdle on penalties at League 2 Hereford, while Darlington secured a first win of the season by defeating Lincoln City 1-0.

Accrington Stanley and AFC Bournemouth both defeated higher league opposition with 2-1 wins over Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town respectively, proving the competition offers an equal chance of progression for all clubs.

Meanwhile, Torquay enjoyed a debut win at Cheltenham Town with Danny Stevens scoring twice in a 3-1 away success.

Finally a north/south divide emerged in the first round as the northern section proved successful for away teams, with seven away wins and just one home victory, while the southern section proved lucky for home teams with six out of eight progressing.

Johnstone’s Marketing Manager, Tom Newton, said: “What an exciting night for fans and teams alike, as the competition once again provided drama and excitement in bucket loads.

“Forty four goals represents a magnificent action packed beginning to the trophy and if this is a sign of things to come, then we can all look forward to the biggest and best Johnstone’s Paint Trophy yet.”
