Carlisle United Manager Greg Abbott

Opportunity knocks for abbott

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott might say that the prospect of playing Leeds United is ‘frightening,’ but don’t let that fool you. The Cumbrians have lost just three games in 15, have enjoyed some recent successes against their Yorkshire counterparts, and are desperate to beat them again in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern area final.

When the manager was asked if he saw Leeds’ remarkable 1-0 win at Manchester United in the FA Cup, his response was endearingly jovial, if not completely truthful.

“I didn’t see Leeds’ FA Cup game. I don’t need to see any more of them – I’m frightened enough as it is!

“Obviously they are a great side with real quality, but we have won against them in the league in the last two seasons and we will be giving as good as we get against them again.

“What I can guarantee is that you will see two excellent games of football. We have lost 3 in 15 games. That is a good run of form and we now need to keep our levels up.”

Carlisle United have enjoyed their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy exploits and know all about the value of a trip to the final, having been there 3 times in their recent history.

Abbott added: “We have really enjoyed the trophy this season. It does take off a bit of pressure from the league, but it is a competition that the fans and players are taking extremely seriously.

“We are desperate to get to Wembley. It would be a magical day out for us and we can’t wait for our games against Leeds now.”

Carlisle United will play Leeds United at Elland Road in the first leg on Tuesday January 19 and again in the second leg at Brunton Park on Tuesday February 9.

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
