Abbott - swapping Weatherfield for Wembley

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott came up with one of the understatements of the season when reflecting on his side's historic trip to Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. "That was better than a night in front of the TV watching Coronation Street!"

February 2010

After one of the most pulsating evenings in Johnstone's Paint Trophy history, the boss took one look at his bitten fingernails and expressed his love for his players, if not the daily goings-on in Weatherfield.

Abbott said: "That was probably the best way for us to go through. We could have made life easier for ourselves but we have got some bottle and character, and that's what got us through.

"It beats watching Coronation Street. It beats Eastenders as well - even if there are some decent storylines on at the moment!"

Carlisle United appeared to be coasting to the final when beating Leeds 2-1 at Brunton Park with around 20 minutes to go.

But a Leeds late show eventually took the game to penalties after Jason Crowe and Mike Grella turned the tie on its head.

Abbott added: "As soon as Leeds got it back to 1-1 I started thinking about penalties, so I never thought we were through, not even when we went 2-1 up.

"But we have showed our character again. That's what we base everything around. The lads all stick together and you could see that on the pitch."

The prospect of a trip to Wembley now beckons for Abbott, who is now reflecting on the proudest moment of his career.

"This is definitely the proudest moment of my career. To get to the mecca of football is a dream come true. I have walked past Wembley once or twice but never been inside.

"We have given the Johnstone's Paint Trophy the utmost respect and have treaded it in the highest regard since day one. We have got our rewards now and we can't wait."

Abbott also paid tribute to the city of Carlisle as a whole, which has something to shout about again after the devastating floods which crippled the area.

"It is amazing what a boost football can give a place. We hope the city will really enjoy this moment. And it should be dry on March 28 come final day!"

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
